Unlike Spanish or French, it\u2019s a language with no known connection or root.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Linguists are still scratching their heads over its origins. It was here before the Romans, even before Latin influenced the rest of the continent.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cZorioneku\u201d is the oldest written word found in Euskera (meaning \u201cfortunate\u201d or \u201clucky\u201d). It was discovered on a 3rd-century Roman tablet by an archeologist who also happens to make chocolate in Navarra!<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Isn\u2019t it incredible? A word from a language spoken thousands of years ago that still resonates today.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Euskera is very much alive. It\u2019s still spoken today in San Sebasti\u00e1n and throughout the Basque Country. Strolling through the Parte Vieja (Old Town), you\u2019ll hear locals greeting each other with \u201cKaixo\u201d (Hello) and thanking shopkeepers with \u201cEskerrik asko\u201d (Thank you). Street names are, by law, both in Spanish and Euskera. In Euskera,\u201dtxuri\u201d means white and \u201curdin\u201d means blue, the colors of the city and its beloved football team, Real Sociedad. Fans proudly call themselves \u201ctxuri-urdinak\u201d, a term that goes beyond sports to reflect local pride. You\u2019ll also find this name at the Txuri Urdin Ice Palace, a popular ice skating rink and home to the city\u2019s ice hockey club. Whether on the field or the ice, \u201ctxuri-urdin\u201d represents more than colors;\u00a0 it\u2019s a symbol of Donostia\u2019s community and spirit.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Euskera is also present in traditional festivals like the Tamborrada in San Sebastian, where locals march through the streets singing \u201cHau dek Hau or \u201cGau Ibilera\u201d (\u201cThis is something else!\u201d and \u201cNight Walk\u201d) or during the Aste Nagusia (Big Week) celebrations, where you\u2019ll hear Basque music and songs filling the air. Even in casual settings, Basques slip in Euskera phrases, whether it\u2019s a toast \u201cTopa!\u201d (Cheers!) over a glass of Sagardoa (cider) or Goazen (let\u00b4s go).<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Language of Pintxos: If you\u2019ve been on one of our food tours (or are planning to\u00a0, you\u2019ll notice that Euskera is everywhere, especially in the world of pintxos! Ever wondered why so many pintxo names end in -txo? That\u2019s a Basque diminutive, like saying \u201c-ito\u201d in Spanish or \u201c-y\u201d in English. It makes things sound cute or small, but in this case, it makes them sound delicious!<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ogitxoa (Basque):\u00a0 Little bread, equivalent to \u201cpanecito\u201d in Spanish<\/li>\n\n<li>Biguntxo (Basque): Something that is very soft or tender<\/li>\n\n<li>Sagardotxo bat (basque): which is a playful way of asking for a small cider, similar to saying \u201ca little cider\u201d in English. It combines Sagardoa (cider) with the -txo diminutive, making it sound casual and endearing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best way to learn Euskera through food.
